same yarn, different gauges
While my Paul Klee Pullover is a good project for TV knitting -- I have miles and miles of stockinette to knit and that's just for the body, it's a bit unwieldy to schlep around. So I started another project in the same yarn, but at a different gauge.
Last week at a knitting group, I was able to see an example of Artus in person and I fell in love with the texture and the mosaic colourwork.
It didn't take me long to purchase the pattern and go stash diving. I pulled out some yarn and thought "ok yes, these" and went to bed. The next day I realized that I'd miscounted and I didn't need one of the colours -- it's five different colours in total, not MC and 5 CC. Good I like this combo even better.
Three swatches later, I've settled on a needle size. I'm unsure if my very loose gauge is because I believe the Bartlettyarns sport is a bit more of a fingering, or because the pullover is knit at a looser gauge and that's what I'm defaulting to almost regardless of whatever needle I choose. I ended up with the same blocked gauge (18 sts x 32 rows) with both 3.5 and 3mm needles. As it is with a 2.75mm I'm at 20 sts x 34 rows.
Not ideal, but it's a shawl and while gauge matters for yardage, it's not critical for fit and if this blocks out huge I will be happy. I like big shawls! The waffle fabric I'm creating with this size needle is superb. My hope is that I don't run out of yarn. I'm not worried about running out of C1, I have more of the Dark Sheep Grey.
color | starting grams | available meters
c1 (dark sheeps grey) | 158 | 549.5
c2 (blackberry heather*) | 92.9 | 232.1
c3 (grey) | 105.5 | 367.0
c4 (blue heather) | 94.9 | 329.9
c5 (braken) | 84.3 | 293.0
Once I've gotten into the habit of the waffle stitch it's proven straightforward to work up. There were a few issues in the swatches where I lost count.
I am curious to see how working the same yarn at two different gauges plays out. I hope there won't be any issues on the pullover.
