If I’m going to take on this mitzvah, I’m going to do it my way. That means spinning the yarn and weaving the talit.
On 2022-11-27 I purchased 4 pounds of whool from W H Lindsay.
- 2 pounds of Shearer’s choice Cheviot Carded Sliver (21dd)
- 1 pound Silver Grey Local Carded Sliver (24d-1)
- 1 pound of White Primitive Breed Carded Sliver (21dk)
The 21dk has some VM in it, so my goal is to use it to get back in the habit of spinning and practice weaving. I expect this to become a talit bag (which I’ll line with purchased fabric).
I hope I can spin enough of the 21dd for warp and weft but I honestly have no idea how this will go. I’m honestly nervous to spin a warp, so I may purchase a commercial yarn for that. The pound of silver grey is for potential stripes. We’ll ignore the fact that at the moment I only have a 15 inch wide loom and I know I want wider.
The atarah band I hope to spin some silk hankies and weave. I’m unsure yet if I’ll warp face weave a design or embroider on top of a plain weave.
Project Log
12 Av 5783/2023-07-30M – replaced the bands ages ago today was the first time I could sit and spin again. Made it mostly through my next 25g. I think I’ll ply this to what I made in March and we’ll go from there. Somehow I don’t think it is going as well as I’d hoped. The wheel is much happier for the attention I paid it.
04 Nisan 5783/2023-03-26U – The plying went horribly, I chain plied and it looks like my first ever attempt. I changed ratios and spun the next 25g of single slower and it’s better… except I somehow got sunburnt this afternoon. I ordered new bands hopefully they’ll arrive soon!
02 Nisan 5783/2023-03-24F – spun 25g of the 21dk. I need to order new bands for the wheel, it’s quite wobbly.
